Currently a modern town, Epidaurus was a small city in the ancient Greece. The city is located on the Argoild Peninsula and now contains two modern towers with the name Epidavros. In the past days, the city was not independent like the other cities and the Romans helped to develop the city and expanded its territory. The city is a famous place as it is considered as the birthplace of Asclepius the healer, the son of Apollo, following the Greek mythology. The city is also famous for its theatre which is also used in the modern days. The city also holds the asclepeion, a healing center for the classical world. To find their cure, they used to sleep in a big sleeping hall to sleep at night and it is said that god appears in their dreams to suggest them their remedies. The theatre had brought a revolutionary change in the city in past and now still is being used to entertain the audiences in different ways. Now, this is one of the most attractive places in Greece.

Located on the side of Aegean Sea, Thessaloniki is a port city in Greece and bears the symbols from different empires including Roman, Ottoman and Byzantine. The city was founded in 315 BC and the remains of the empires are still visible in the current days though many of those were destroyed by the Great Fire in 1917. The rebuilt part of the city has got a modern European design and now is used as the hub for national and international trade and commerce. The second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki is the capital of Greek Macedonia and also known as the co-capital. The place now is the major transportation hub as it is well connected with the southern Europe. Tourists mostly come here for the annual cultural festivals and events. The city was kept under the Ottoman Empire for around 482 years and some of its Byzantine monuments have been declared as world heritage sites. This is a popular destination for the tourists out of Greece.

Located near the ancient Sparta, Mystra is a fortified town in Greece. The city served as the capital for a Byzantine locality during the 14th and 15th century. The city was inhabited during the Ottoman Empire until the fresh town named Sparti was built nearby. The city mostly flourished during the 15th century in terms of culture and became one of the prosperous one. The town became the seat of Byzantine after lots of events and battles which concluded the Latin Empire. The fortress was built in the city to protect it from the raids and counter raids by the Byzantines and the Franks. The city has experienced some cultural revolutions and thus it became the place of attraction for the top class architects and artists of the surrounding locality. Many of the ancient ruins of the city have been declared as World Heritage Site. This is great place for the tourist in Greece.

4.  Zagori:

Zagori is a beautiful region located in the Pindus Mountains in the northwestern part of Greece. The entire area of the locality is around 1000 square kilometers with a total of 46 villages. The triangle shape villages are commonly known as Zagorohoria. The place is a famous one for its natural beauties and the national parks are adorable. The geological structure of the area is striking. Mountain roads have interconnected the villages and during the 18th century, there were some stone arched bridges made to attract the merchants and people to make the city into a business hub and later the stone bridges were changed with wooden bridges. The roads were modernized in the 1950s. Surrounded by mountains, the city was difficult to be conquered and thus it remained free of empirical ruling systems. The city has produced several famous people and played influential roles in politics, economy, art and culture of the locality. This is also a great visiting place for the tourists out of Greece.

Believed to be determined by Zeus, Delphi is a famous sanctuary in Greece. Besides, the Greeks believe that this location is the center of the world. The striking Delphi site is located at the sole of Mount Parnassus. Archaeologically the site is important and it is considered as one of the World Heritage Sites in Greece. Many of the monuments established here show that the civilization in the place was enriched in terms of arts and cultures. During the 800 BC the site was dedicated for the worship of Apollo, the prime god of the Greeks. The mythology says that Apollo saved the people in the locality by killing a serpent there. The city was also famous as it held may musical competitions in its premise. The eternal fire in the temple of Apollo (also known as the site of ancient oracle) was changed with the fire from Greece. The site also experienced some colonies as well. Half of its surface is covered by olive groves. Now, this is a wonder for the visitors around the world.

One of the wonderful places in Greece and the local areas of the place are surrounded by rounded boulders. The meaning of the word refers to the middle of the sky or suspended in the air. The locality is made with rocks and boulders which attracts the tourists most. Eastern Orthodox monasteries are located in Meteora. There are six monasteries available on the locality now which are built on natural sandstone rock pillars. The site is an enlisted World Heritage Site. Geologically, it is hard to explain the rock formation of the site. The rocks are made with a mixture of sandstone and conglomerate instead of hard ingenious rocks that are found everywhere. The man-made constructions in the site date back to 23,000 years and the exact dates of making the monasteries have not been found yet but it is estimated that those were made during 11th and 12th centuries. Access to the monasteries was difficult earlier but this a great place for the tourists.

Famous for its fine beaches, Lindos is an archaeological site in Greece. It was a former municipality of island of Rhodes. The place is also famous for the natural beauties and the large bay offers many exciting activities to the visitors. Fishing is a popular activity here. Foundation of the city was done in 10th century by the Dorians. The location served as a major trading center in the 8th century. The city was expanded during the Roman and Hellenistic periods. A natural citadel was built in the site which was dominated by different empires like Romans, Byzantine and Greeks. The acropolises are the other relics that attract people from around the globe. The Castle of St. John is another important structure that was built before 1317. The location has also been used in films. The acropolis site was excavated in 1900 and now the sites are attracting tourists. This is one of the wonderful places in Greece for external visitors.

8. Mykonos:

Commonly known as the island of wind, this is one of the most crowded places in Greece for its amazing environment. This Greek isle is the part of Cyclades island group located in the Aegean Sea. The entire area is filled with a festive mood and thus many of the Greeks and visitors gather here. The thumping music from the sand side bars make the moments more enjoyable. Usually the bars and dance clubs remain open round the night. The island population is over 10,000 and most of them live in the town which is better known as Chora. Tourism has bloomed here perfectly. Different tourist destinations have been established here. The first human settlement was found here in the 11th century. The island has been ruled by the Roman Empire in the 12th century and it was also attacked by some other invaders to occupy it. Whatever the past has been, now the island is a piece of small heaven for the tourists around the globe.

Located about 200 kilometers away from the Greece mainland, Santorini is an island that belongs to Cyclades island group of the Aegean Sea. In the 16th century, the island was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The largest island in this archipelago contains over 15 thousand populations. The island in fact is the remains after the volcanic eruptions and the existing geological features have been shaped after the eruption. The rectangular lagoon is surrounded by cliffs from three sides while the main island is slopped down to the Aegean Sea. Interestingly, the lagoon is unable for ships of vessels to anchor here for its depth. So far, it is known that the island and the surrounding area became volcanically active around 4 million years ago and gave birth to historical eruptions. The eruption is responsible for the collapse of the Minoan civilization in the island. But now, this is one the most tourist-friendly destinations in entire Greece.

10. Mount Athos:

Locally known as the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos is a mountain and peninsula which is located in the northern part of Greece. This is also a World Heritage Site for its extraordinary beauty. This mountain also holds Eastern Orthodox monasteries which are under the jurisdiction of Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Earlier, the mountain was known as Athos and the entire peninsula was also termed in to a different name. The mount has a long history of human inhabitation that dates back to 800 A.D. Now the locality is inhabited by monks from different countries while the monasteries are well decorated with preserved artifacts, ancient books, artworks, precious documents etc. This is a restricted area for the commoners but if the permission from the Monastic State’s authorities, movement is not a problem at all. Earlier, entrance of women was prohibited here as well. The mountain has experienced different ruling period like Byzantine ruling period, Ottoman era etc. Now this is one of the impressive tourist spots in the country.
