10 Beautiful Island in Europe

1. Capri:


Capri is one of the famous islands in the Gulf of Naples and known best for its rugged landscape and beaches. Besides, the knickknacks produced in the surrounding locality, especially the leather sandals are globally famous. The island is located on the Tyrrhenian Sea on the south part of the Gulf of Naples. Interestingly the island shares the name of the same city which is located on the island and is being used a resort form an ancient age (Roman Republic). The island attracts the visitors mostly for its town of Anacapri, the remaining of the Roman villas, the limestone crags and more. The Capri town is the key attraction in the island and allows the visitors to perform a good number of things. The island is blessed with two natural harbours and the sides of the island is filled with vertical cliffs.

2. Mallorca:



This is like a beautiful medium-sized locket on the neck of Mediterranean and mostly famous for several reasons including the beach resorts and limestone mountains. The island also contains some of the ancient remains like the Moorish remains and the ruins of Roman empires. Besides, there is a 13th century cathedral in the islands which is used for hosting Copa del Rey regatta. The Stone-built village is considered as the center of attraction and contains the art gallery. Besides, the summer classical music festival also helps gathering some crowds on the island. Some of the parts of the island has been bordered by Spain while the most of its parts are located on the Mediterranean. The capital, Palma, belongs to an autonomous community and been considered as an autonomous region since 1983. The island has turned into a popular destination for a good number of people of the nearby countries.


3. Santorini:


Presently this is a rugged village with the similar landscape but it was ruined by a volcanic eruption during the 16th century and got the present shape. The island is famous for its clear beaches which are made of white, black and red lava pebbles. The island is located in the southern region of the Aegean Sea and the mainland of Greece is around 200 kilometers away from here. Santorini is in fact the largest one among the archipelago located here. Some parts of the island are inhibited while the other parts are not. Before the volcanic eruption it was a single island but it seems that the eruption has turned into a blessing for it. The giant rectangular lagoon is one of the key attractions here but another islands separates the lagoon from the sea. The economy of the islands is mostly based on tourism but there are some people who rely on agriculture as well.


4. Crete:


The fine sand beaches have made the island famous in Europe and now this is considered as the largest island for Greece. The island is also historically important for some reasons and it is told that the one of the mountains of the island, according to the Greek Mythology, is the birthplace of Zeus. The Palace of Knossos is one of the attractions of the island that looks like a maze and the Archaeological Museum also attracts some crowds as well. The earliest civilization of Europe was settled here which was known as the Minoan civilization. The island looks stunning for its mountainous nature, coastline and the surrounding natural landscape and Seas. Since the islands is encircled by a couple of geographical locations, the climate of the island belongs to several climatic zones together – North African and Mediterranean. So, the island atmosphere provides the taste of both the climatic conditions – winters are mild and snowfalls are common. As a result, it has become a great place for the tourists.

5. The Isle of Wight:


Located on the English Channel, the Isle of Wight is one of the most populous and the largest island in England. The natural beauties of the islands have been recognized since the Victorian era and accordingly it has turned into a MUST destination for the local and international tourists. Presently, there are several resorts available in the islands which accommodate the visitors. The island has its warm attachment with some of the notable English people including the Queen Victoria and Tennyson among others. The island is also used for some other purposes like the development center of rockets in Britain, boat building and even the first hovercraft was developed here. Besides, the preservation of wildlife is an adorable achievement of the island and it also held the largest rock music festival in 1970. In the beginning, the island was a private property and turned into an independent country in 1890. The island is linked with the mainland by ferry and hovercraft services.
 

6. Canary Islands:


Canary Islands are mostly famous for their black and white sandy beaches and its climate. This islands are the part of archipelago near Africa and some parts of Spain. Some of its islands are dominated by snowy peaks and the astronomical observatory is another great place for the visitors from home and abroad. The archipelago has some islands and some islets and geographically they are in some perfect positions. The islands are also the largest populated in the Macaronesia region and most importantly it attracts visitors for the natural beauties. Some of the islands parts are declared as World Heritage Site (Mount Teide) and the third tallest volcano of the world is also located here. The majority of the islands’ climates is subtropical and thus the summers and winter s are moderately warmer. Due to high locations the mountains are perfect place for astronomical observation. The islands have been used as stoppage by the Spanish galleons in different centuries.

7. Gozo:

This is one of the historic islands in the European region and its history is related with a good number of rulers and ruling periods including the Arabs, the Romans, the Phoenicians, the British, the French and the Sicilians. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, the island has been being inhibited since thousand years and thus there are some ancient ruins also available which remind the glorious past of the island. The scuba diving sites are one of the popular activities performed by a good number of travelers in the island. Though the island is the part of Malta, this is considered as the second largest island and the rural environment is charming indeed. Many of the visitors like the island for its less developed features. The seaside resorts are gaining fame in the present days for the outstanding services. The island has played role in local cultural evolution greatly and different edifices are found in the present day as the testimony.

8. Zakynthos:

The exotic beaches have made the island popular to the global population and this is a Greek island filled with summer resorts. Swimming and the other water sports are the most popular activities here. The island is accessible by boat from the mainland. Though this is the third largest island of Ionian Islands, this is a separate administrative unit and has its own municipality. The coastline is around 123 kilometers in length while the island covers an area of 410 square kilometers. The island is termed in different names and the most popular of them is – The Flower of the East, and the name suggests the natural beauty of the island. The island has also been represented in some famous literatures and the name of the island has been derived from the name of Zakynthos, the son of the king Dardanos of Troy. The island underwent rulers and rules of different period and also was part of different empires in those days. The island also suffered some natural disaster but now is in a perfect state.

9. Kefallinia:


The island is just 30 miles west of the mainland of Greece and it is famous for the cliffs and the beaches filled with white sands. Interestingly, many of the beaches are accessible through walking and the feelings are exceptional for the walkers. The limestone cliffs are available in different parts of the island and has created a picturesque landscape. The island is the largest one among the Ionian Islands in Greece the capital, Argostoli, is one of the most attractive places in the entire island. The population density is lower in this island despite its immense length for some reasons and the reputation of the island as the earthquake zone is one of them. Back in 1953, the settlements of the island were destroyed by a massive earthquake. But the island is filled with some natural beauties and mountains are notable among them, and the highest mountain elevation is 1628 meters. In the past days, the island underwent several ruling periods and now is considered as one of the most visiting places in Europe.

10. Sicily:

 

This is one of the most famous location in Italy and the island’s name has been used in numerous literatures as the ground of mafia – who did not follow by rules rather they created their own rules and got fame around the globe. The island is also considered as the largest island in the Mediterranean region and the history of the island dates back around 3000 years ago but evidences show that the human settlement in the islands began in 12,000 BC. Presently, the street life, marketplaces, natural beauties etc. are the key attraction for the outsiders in the island. Now this is an autonomous region in Italy and located in the central part of the Mediterranean Sea. The fall of Roman Empire had brought a bad luck for the island and it was ruled by several rulers and dominators. The island became part of Italy in 1860 and it received the autonomous status in 1946. Presently, the island is one of the most sought islands in the entire region.
